Blast Takes Three Carabinieri During Property Removal Procedure in Northern Italy
Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen additional individuals were hurt in an apparently intentional gas explosion at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.
How It Happened
The explosion took place as officers and emergency crews approached the property close to the city of Verona to carry out an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
The three victims who died belonged to the Italian military police.
Legal Proceedings
A man and a woman were taken into custody at the location and another man who escaped following the incident was apprehended shortly later. All three have been admitted to the hospital.
The detonation could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the location displayed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.
“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to remove the three siblings in the previous occasions.
Background and Motive
The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was under an court order due to debts incurred by the siblings.
Mediators had been assigned to talk with the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think a family member triggered the detonation.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told the media.
“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation directly hit our officers,” he said.
Incendiary devices were also found at the residence, the Interior Minister confirmed.
Injuries and Destruction
Those injured by the incident included eleven more officers of the military police as well as three members of national police and a emergency responder.
According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.
The official was convinced the detonation had happened on a floor above the doorway and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the explosion, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being activated”.
Neighbor Statements
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents stated to local news, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
The Defense Minister the Defence Minister united with other government officials in commemorating the three men who had died in the line of duty.
