Chicago's MLB Team Sign Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on an Major $34 Million Contract.

In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a two-year contract for the high-profile player.

Contract Details and Added Benefits

The deal includes a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside compensation of $16 million for the 2026 season and $17M for the 2027 year.

Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for earning the MVP award.
  • $500K for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250K for finishing fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.

The agreement includes that he cannot be sent to the farm system without his consent and allows him to become a free agent at the conclusion of the deal. Extra provisions include a team-provided interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.

Compensation and Franchise History

As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club are also entitled to a additional payment of 15% triggered incentive payments.

Murakami is set to become the fourth-ever player from Japan to suit up for the White Sox, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, joins a promising core of hitters in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a last-place season, placing last in the division but representing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.

Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 career batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. He started playing mainly at first, he has spent most of his time to third base.

Murakami's big-game performance were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the semifinal against Mexico, he drove in a walk-off double that drove in two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The very next day in the championship game against the USA, he slugged a tying home run in the early innings, helping Japan's eventual title triumph.
