We are checking video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the site of where the images were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
