Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with Scream 7.
The long-awaited slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a major gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment marks the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a role you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallen Characters
It has been established that a trio of different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though meeting their demise in prior movies. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the return of the beloved and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first occasion since a brief cameo is a long-held wish, though he is terrified about the public's reaction. The actor clearly remembers the exact moment he received the offer from the series creator.
"I remember the phone call. I recall the pleasantries. I recall him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the years since the 1996 movie premiered, which left Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he explains. "A character that is now represented in each and every Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fans
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular series.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard observes. "At the start, I have no idea if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Excitement Abound
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back persists. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Or, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a strange communal situation. The possibility of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of classic genre films, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
