Citizens have gathered throughout the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as talks proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in Gaza.

The incident led to over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.

"The bloodthirsty adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.

He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership postponed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of people killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas delegations met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the proposal.

A high-ranking Palestinian official involved in the discussions said that an late session of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.

The source explained the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, due to differences over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the deal.

He commented that the negotiations are "tough and have still not produce any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to reduce the gaps between the both parties.

Essential Issues in Negotiations

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Post-war administration of the area

Citizen Reaction

In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose sibling endured the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - told: "No place appears as home any longer and until all the hostages are released none of us will have peace of mind."

"After we see everyone home once more, we can relax again. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.

Outside the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to express their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel states nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.

Activist a participant stated: "We need do every compromise required for the abducted to return. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that approximately seventy percent of the population want the war to finish in exchange for the release of the hostages.

Gaza Circumstances

At the area of the gathering, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.

From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the heavy Israeli shelling persisted.

In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone districts and in the east side district of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"When the dusk comes, the fear comes with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack last year, shared.

"My family are fearful of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my youngest child who places his face on me throughout the night."

"Every second we monitor the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the south part district.
