This year's NBA season begins now, marking the initial occasion in a ten years that Aussie two most prominent basketball stars – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are unsigned.
Their absence indicates a transition period, as Boomers’ guard pair Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels step up as essential players for contending teams, with new huge contracts establishing them as some of Australia’s highest sporting earners.
They aren't the only ones. A group of 14 Aussies are set to compete for minutes around the league, including veteran centres Jock Landale and Duop Reath, up-and-coming forwards in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to intriguing draftees like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Out to Prove Himself
After protracted negotiations with the Chicago Bulls, Giddey ultimately signed his rookie extension worth US$100 million (A$153 million) over four years last month. It's a major deal for the Melburnian, but in league standards it is affordable for his role and reputation as a primary ball-handler. The reluctance for Chicago’s front office to pay top dollar means the 23-year-old begins this year with much to prove.
Having been traded by Oklahoma City at the beginning of last season, Giddey watched as his old team stormed to the title in his absence. As the Bulls aim to make the playoffs in the less competitive Eastern Conference, he will need to show his scoring and defence are elite-level or else he may fall back towards the league's outskirts.
Dyson Daniels Eyes Another Step
Daniels agreed to the identical contract as Giddey this week, and after his MIP honor last year, the Hawks player's trajectory has skyrocketed in the city following his exit from the Pelicans. He is now lauded as one of the league’s best perimeter defenders, and led the league in takeaways with 3.0 spg – more than one whole steal per match greater than the total of second place.
Playing next to flamboyant Trae Young in the Hawks, the youngster can be effective this campaign as a playmaking option and elite defender as long as the Hawks advance to the postseason. But if he can elevate his long-range game, which was below league average last year, and continue to enhance his passing and attacking, Daniels could become one of the league’s most well-rounded talents.
Johnny Furphy On Highlight Watch
Indiana forward the rookie has emerged as a crowd favorite in Indiana following a succession of spectacular slam dunks in exhibition games. His acrobatics prompted league figure Pat Beverley to label him as the “top Caucasian leaper we’ve seen in a long time”, and an invite to the mid-season dunk contest could be on the table.
After playing just 8 mpg per contest over 50 games in his debut season, the former college student is in contention for a Pacers rotation that might favor youth following injury to star playmaker Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor An Outside Shot
Guard the Sydney native dropped in the NBA Draft all the way to the second round, where Eastern Conference contenders the Cavaliers picked him. The Cavs are favourites to make the NBA finals from the East, so it would be unusual for a rookie drafted in the second round to see much playing minutes. But the Sydney product has earned time in pre-season, and his pro-level shooting gives him a chance to contribute.
Minutes Crunch Looms for Experienced Group
Seasoned big man Jock Landale has a chance to secure the starting five position in the Grizzlies given top prospect Zach Edey will miss the opening of the season after ankle surgery.
In the Trail Blazers, Duop Reath is the veteran backup to young centres Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could play regular minutes if the team become competitive. His teammate Matisse Thybulle is expected to be used as a defensive spark off the bench.
In Charlotte, Josh Green’s off-season shoulder procedure has left him without a timeline to come back. The player still has a deal for the upcoming year, but won’t want to give his teammates at the rebuilding Charlotte too much head start. And injury has already hindered Dante Exum, who has a knee complaint and has been absent for important exhibition chances in the Mavericks.
Australian NBA Players Fighting for Roles
Additionally, there are those who are not expected to see much, if any, court time this season. Veteran Joe Ingles is returned in Minnesota, but seems to be primarily a big brother keeping Anthony Edwards in check.
Rookie Rocco Zikarsky is expected to be nurtured by the Wolves through their G-League team. Fellow first-year players Lachlan Olbrich in Chicago and Alex Toohey for the Golden State Warriors are also in the slow cooker, while the more seasoned Luke Travers will be aiming to win playing time alongside Proctor for the Cavaliers.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Fish for a Deal
If there were any doubts Patty Mills was planning to end his career, he addressed it with a workout video shared on his social media recently, demonstrating the 37-year-old remains sharp and determined on landing another league deal.
What Simmons is thinking is anyone’s guess after an break in his homeland, angling and playing with a Sherrin. Although he posted on social media recently to reject suggestions he was done, the 29-year-old – an All Star as recently as 2021 – has yet to surface.
