Walmart Enforces Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products
As a notable development, Walmart has started implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can acquire during a single visit. This policy was activated as of early November, according to a company memo distributed to employees.
Tackling Reseller Problems
Although not formally announced by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was influenced by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer buying an enormous quantity of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video received widespread backlash for allowing the bulk transaction to proceed.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The updated guideline specifies that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card boxes or packs each time they enter. However, the language has sparked debate due to its vagueness. What exactly qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and if someone could still purchase five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Moreover, because the restriction is tied to each visit, in theory a determined scalper could return repeatedly—purchasing the maximum each time—to gather significant stocks throughout the day.
The Scalping Phenomenon
For the average collector, this approach might seem excessive, but for scalpers, it's standard practice. In recent years, speculators have greatly contributed to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.
Certain buyers seek to resell sealed items at a markup, while others search for rare cards that can fetch extraordinary prices. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card in recent releases is currently selling for over $800 in online marketplaces.
Upcoming Releases
The new rule coincides with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Early listings indicate chase cards like the Charizard mega evolution listed for around fifteen hundred dollars, emphasizing the persistent interest and potential reseller attention.
Hopefully, the retail limits will help reduce bulk purchases and increase access for genuine collectors and casual players as well.
